A Jersey rodeo opens its doors to women

When South Jersey’s Cowtown Rodeo decided last year to eliminate breakaway ropers for women, Carol Ann Nieratko knew she had to do something about it.

As the owner and producer of Rustic River Events, Nieratko began organizing her own Jersey rodeo.

Now, Ocean County’s inaugural rodeo is in full swing, bringing the thrills of this traditionally western and southern sport to the Jersey Shore for men — and women — aiming to compete at the professional level. Although women can compete at other levels, competing at the professional level allows them to earn from the sport and helps them qualify for national competitions
